Chapter Twelve
Ezra walked into his empty apartment late Sunday afternoon a little frazzled and pretty well fucked out. He locked the door before flopping face-first onto the sex couch. His thighs cried out in relief at having weight taken off them. Ezra hadn’t shacked up with someone for the weekend since Bryan, and it had been pretty awesome.
Except for the hangover part. And the leaving part.
He didn’t mind his sore muscles, because they were a pleasant reminder of all the time he’d spent fucking Donner. They’d had quite a lot of fantastic sex—in the bathtub, again on the sleeper sofa, downstairs in Donner’s apartment. But more than that, they’d spent a hell of a lot of time talking. They’d finally had the “I’m clean/So am I” chat—maybe a little belatedly, considering all the sex they’d had already, but it was the first time since Bryan that Ezra wanted—no, needed—the guy he was with to know he played safe and tested regularly.
Ezra wasn’t huge on talking, but they mostly stayed away from too-serious stuff. Donner had even told him a few stories about Street Feed shenanigans. Seemed Jacob was as good a prankster as he was a cook.
Hearing Donner talk so fondly of his ex hadn’t made Ezra jealous, not really. He couldn’t compete with a ghost. Definitely not with the ghost of someone who sounded fucking perfect in every way. Maybe Ezra wasn’t good enough for Donner, but he’d take what he could get until Donner figured it out.
No pain, no gain. He snorted into the cushion. He didn’t want any more pain or heartache, but something deep inside told him that Donner was worth the risk.
Plus they’d already agreed to a date on Thursday night. Ezra would have preferred sooner, but he understood Donner’s need to schedule around Julie and Vince for a while.
He and Donner kept in touch during the week by texting. Okay, so Ezra sent most of the texts the first two days, and it took a while to get answers out of Donner, which started to annoy him. Until Donner finally called and reminded him of his general hatred of cell phones and texting. With that information in place, Ezra didn’t mind being the one doing the bulk of the texting. Donner would always pick up the phone if he called, unless he was working.
Thursday night Ezra worked at the bookstore until close, and he took his time walking home. Donner was coming by around seven. They didn’t have specific plans yet. Ezra hoped they included dinner and sex (not necessarily in that order).
After a quick shower, he chose a pair of tight stone-washed jeans and a royal blue V-neck, a matching blue belt, and the cerulean blue contact lenses he usually wore only when he was cruising. He liked the way the blue made his white-blond hair even brighter.
The doorbell rang a few minutes before seven. Donner stood on the other side in jeans and a light spring jacket—not super-sexy clothes, but any time he wasn’t wearing his Pot O Gold costume he looked amazing.
